Seth is attending his first youth camp this Weekend. He has been so excited about this since the opportunity came up. He was battling the flu last weekend and one of the main things on his mind was recovery in time to be able to attend the Weekend.
But as we got closer to the camp ground we could tell there was some apprehension rising up.
It was cool to see him earlier in the evening, his excitement clearly increasing. He didn’t have be talking about the Weekend to see that his anticipation was rising.
As he was getting things together scurrying around to make sure he had all the things he needed. Then when inevitably he remember one more thing the way he’d essentially bound up and down the stairs.
But once we were on the road he was talking a lot about the road we were on. I didn’t think about it at first. But then he pointed out a specific landmark. A little bit later another one. We realized he was trying to get his bearings.
Then finally we were a little farther out than he had context for and he finally went, “So. How far away is the Camp?”
He’s growing up. And I couldn’t be more excited. I couldn’t be more proud. But he’s not grown quite yet.
Lis and I were able to reassure him on a few different fronts. She and I participate in discipleship weekends on the same Campground so we’re familiar with it. We’ve known various folks who are part of leadership of the Weekend for a long time, we trust them. But that uncertainty on his part did catch me off guard after the days leading up to.
This is going to be a great Weekend for him at it’s core – because of the why of the Weekend itself. But it is also cool to watch him, walk with him as he grows up.
